Mice, Men and Monsters
“World needs bad men, we keep the other bad men from the door.”
-Rust Cohle (True Detective)
As a champion you get used to walking around with a target on your back.
That’s one thing people don’t account for. It doesn’t matter if it’s the World Championship or the little league MVP trophy -- your best friend is willing to break your back all in the name of glory.
You have to keep your wits about you. Keep training. Stay on your toes. Build an army of loyal soldiers… ones willing to put their body on the line for you. Ones who you can call on to step up when, I don’t know, you're booked against some masked sideshow freak.
I know what Raab is thinking -- I’m not going to be so pretty either when that final bell rings declaring a winner.
But really.. I’m not intimidated by some belligerent neanderthal stumbling over his words telling his going to skull fuck me or some shit heading into his last match at Chaos.
See for people like Raab -- the scariest thing is being outsmarted -- and it ain’t gonna take much.
Alex Ransom dropped the weights from his shoulders letting them hit the ground with a massive boom. He flexes his triceps letting out a groan.
“Raab is world traveled, a bonafide monster in this game. I know you have dealt with the type before, but I’d love to get on the other side of the ring as him.”
Sadly, Ransom was a little bit of a fan boy. Raab has a reputation as a deathmatch icon, a true terror willing to do anything to put his opponent down -- sometimes destroying himself in the process. I’m not sure Carnage understood what they were doing when they booked this one.
“Yeah, I bet you would. I just have to be ready to take the pain. I know he is going to dish it out and he’s not someone I can't put away early,” I said. “Maybe, I’ll go visit V again, see if she can work her magic a little bit.”
“Positive thinking is one thing, but I wouldn’t rely on her ‘talents’ going forward. Being prepared is half the battle, you taught me that,” Ransom said before jumping onto the pull up bar -- effortlessly hoisting up his gigantic frame over and over.
I continued to stretch out, reaching down to touch my toes. The gym was deserted, just Ransom and I. We rented it out privately for a few hours.
“I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve. Besides, he’s a little weathered now. Not quite the phenom he used to be and I'll expose that on Chaos. It’s my job now as champion whether I like it or not. I don’t open the gate for these kids who just knock, and I’m more than willing to throw these so-called ‘legends’ in the industry to the bottom of the pack when their time is up.”
Ransom hops down from the pull up bar.
“What about the interview this week?”
“Well I was hoping you would be out there with me,” I said.
“Really, I figured you might want to go it alone.”
Manipulation is a fine line. You need to make people feel important, but not too important. Wanted, but not needed. I had to give Ransom something if I expected him to stay loyal -- besides, I won’t be able to do this forever and my next disciple needs to be properly groomed and ready to assume the throne.
“Hell, maybe I’ll let you field some questions let this people know who you really are. Never know -- maybe I’ll want to take a crack at those tag titles at some point.”
He nodded and moved on to the leg press. He never stops working -- that’s the kind of people you need in your corner.
It’s not hard to find a gross alley way in Baltimore to shoot a promo -- take from that what you will. The camera was already rolling. A burning barrel sits slightly toward the camera framing me, Ransom and V -- all wearing replica Lord Raab masks. I’m front and centre with the both of them flanking each shoulder, arms crossed, a brick wall as a backdrop.
“I get it, I’ve got the carrot on a stick and jackass after jackass is going to follow. But c’mon, The Masked German Monster sounds like a handle for a BDSM forum. No wonder Lord Raab hides often hides behind a mask, maybe I should do us all a favor. After I beat him this week I’ll follow his Shrek looking ass back to whatever swamp he lives in, find the few inches of water it takes to drown a man and stand on the back of his head.”
I tilt my head, mocking Raab’s attempt at intimidation. The thing about a bully is you have to get inside their head, you have to talk down. You show fear, they sniff it out. I wasn’t willing to let Raab see that -- not this week.
“You like to harken back to your German heritage, the big German hoss, well then call me the Canadian lumberjack -- because I am about to chop you off at the knees and stunt your momentum.”
“I know the boogeyman used to look like you, I know that people used to fear you -- hell people still do. Hell, I probably should. But as you can see. I do not plan to come alone at Chaos. Growing up I was terrified of men who looked like you, men who acted like you, men with this macho bravado. I suspected they couldn’t back up -- but never had the guts to test it. Once I got into this business I made it my mission to expose people like you. See I have been across from monsters underestimating me -- thinking they are some kind of pretty boy killer -- LISTEN -- I am here to show you I am the baddest man on the whole roster. Hell the whole GOD DAMN industry. And wrestling needs people like me. We elevate the game. We innovate. We use our mind and talent to take this art form to greater heights. It isn’t about braun, oily muscles and a cold stare anymore. This is how a modern promo is cut, this is what a shoot sounds like and I can do it under a fucking Walmart mask and make it work.”
I step toward the camera slightly, the burning barrel’s flames intensify taking up more and more of the frame as I speak.
“I’m going to do you a favor Raab. See you are lucky this isn’t your signature match -- because the odds of me taking you to your limit, the odds of me ending your career in that scenario would be significantly higher. But I am not going to let you beat me this week and I can promise I’ll do whatever it takes. So, let me do you a favor.”
I snap my fingers and Ransom pulls the Chaos Championship from up from the ground behind him and hands it to me. I steep closer to the camera holding the title right next to my face and the replica Raab mask.
“This, this fallacy... this satire... this is the closest anyone if ever going to get to see Lord Raab as Chaos Champion as long as I hold this tittle.”
I laugh along with V, handing the championship back to Ransom who slings it over his shoulder for safe keeping.
“The thing is old man… mice, monsters and men… add a little heat, a little pressure, and well… we’re all reduced to ash.”
“At one point you were a blazing inferno, I won’t deny that -- but now… well you’re nothing but a little flame. You need that fresh shot of oxygen to burn bright again, you need me Raab for relevance. Hell, even if you don’t win. At least for a single two week cycle people gave shit about you again… you’re welcome. Think of me when you ice your bruises and cash your fucking check.”
Ransom, V and I walk toward the camera and the burning barrel. We pull the Lord Raab masks off at the same time and toss them into the burning barrel.
“You know, I’d call this a cremation -- but I think the boys in the business would refer to this as a fucking burial.”
I smirk pulling a cigarette from my pocket, using the fire to light it. I toss it between my lips winking at the camera as I walk toward it.
I pick up the camera to zoom in on the flames melting the plastic masks, embers filling in the deformed eye sockets as the recorder snaps off.
Going to an Ice Hockey match. Las Vegas, Nevada. Sunday 21st March. (Off-Camera)
It was the first time since meeting with Minerva, who's Konrad's girlfriend, Markus, had any time going out to socialise. Still, it wasn't to the usual German social club, which he was somewhat getting comfortable with now, knowing nobody will mock him. It was time for a change as Raab needed to do the one thing he's yet to do, apart from his discovery of supporting FC Koln football, discovering his past interests.
Because the only thing people, even the meet up he had with Konrad's girlfriend he talked about was his past with wrestling and combat sports-related. He didn't know until the discussion with Konrad recently they went to see FC Koln play against a European team. More he forgot about it.
His friends Tobias Schmitz and Jurgen Becker wanted to go for the last few weeks with Markus, but he got caught up with tackling new problems with Sarah Lacklan, a female wrestler Markus wanted nothing more than to destroy her in a match.
They were at the T-Mobile Arena, watching Ice Hockey which the team were called Vegas Golden Knight. Markus attending the ice hockey match helps him get into the sport and remember the times he had when he was younger.
Markus Raab: "Go on, destroy and beat the living hell out of each other."
Markus taps on the glass of the goal post as they were sitting right in front of it. Tobias and Jurgen nodded to see how much Markus enjoyed himself with the game so far with the fights he saw.
Tobias Schmitz: "Ah, that explains why you liked Ice Hockey as a kid, violence."
Jurgen Becker: "I'm glad we found something you would get into because this entire time, you showed a ton of passion for another sport, besides combat sports and soccer."
Markus Raab: "I also love how fast they go with wacking the puck into the goal. That player looks dangerous. Why did I not come here in the first place?"
Tobias Schmitz: "It's because you were scared to be socially active. So does this help you with your past at all?"
That question lingered deep in Markus's mind, thinking about the times he had with his family, including his twin brother of watching Koln Sharks play. Markus nodded directly to Tobias and Jurgen.
Markus Raab: "We went to a majority of the home games, Koln Sharks had. We cheered for them each time they score a goal. We all enjoyed it. Today, I learned memories of getting close to the players, fist-bumping them along with my sister and my brother."
Jurgen Becker: "Wait, you always sat in the front row when watching Ice Hockey?"
Markus Raab: "Yeah, my family were pretty wealthy with their careers as butchers, being the most famous family for that kind of stuff. While my sister took over the family business, Konrad and I never had an interest in doing that. So we always got front row tickets, plus my dad was close friends with a player on that team."
They were interrupted by the buzzer of Vegas Golden Knights, scoring their second goal of the game by a player Markus became a fan of as he cheered like mad, jumping up and down, banging on the glass. The commentator announced the scorer, with Markus chanting along with the fans.
Tobias Schmitz: "It's the first time I've seen Markus so happy. He's enjoying this game."
Jurgen Becker: "It's good we helped him gain his interest in other sports again. I think us being here has helped Markus enjoying himself."
Tobias Schmitz: "More so nobody notices Markus as nobody apart from his family and us has seen him with the mask off."
As the game restarted again as he smiles, Markus sits back down, nods on the approval of coming to the ice hockey game as a spectator. Although he had thoughts at times about the title match, he has coming up.
Markus Raab: "I want to come again. I'm enjoying myself."
Tobias Schmitz: "I'm thrilled to hear that. We can tell how much you love ice hockey, not this much. We so got to get you a season ticket for the games."
Markus Raab: "Although I have to say, when my brother's son starts playing for Anaheim Ducks, I will be supporting them. His son Roderick is a Junior Ice Hockey player."
Jurgen Becker: "You didn't tell me that. Wow, that's awesome. Be a while, though, before you start supporting them."
Markus Raab: "I know. I love this game."
Markus wanted to focus more on the game than talking to his friends for the last fifteen minutes before the final half-time horns, which caused Markus to celebrate when Vegas Golden Knights scored again just seconds before the buzzer went. As everyone left to get drinks and everything, Markus sips on his coke.
Markus Raab: "You know when you both said all women are different?"
Tobias Schmitz: "Yes?"
Markus Raab: "You both were right. I was so nervous as hell speaking to a female professional wrestler, but it turns out that she wrestles a lot like me, except showing off her looks and things I can do that she can't."
Jurgen Becker: "Oh, you speaking about Konrad's girlfriend, right?"
Markus Raab: "Yes. I felt terrible about letting her talk a lot because I was scared of letting my fears, causing me to lose my brother again. I calmed down and relaxed before I had the nerve to ask a question. Minerva is nice, personally. She's guiding Konrad to be angry, guiding Konrad to open up. He's changed in a good way since splitting up with Fizz."
Tobias and Jurgen widened their eyes, with Markus, despite being scared of meeting Minerva, didn't show any signs of attacking Minerva. It was a positive reaction as they clapped for Markus quietly, patting on his shoulder.
Tobias Schmitz: "I'm so proud of you. You got to open up a bit to Minerva?"
Markus Raab: "Yes, she told me about her life, and I told her about mine. I discovered that Konrad and Minerva knew each other in another company before Supreme Championship Wrestling. Konrad mentored her to the top before being a father role model to Minerva. Konrad said he loved her for years but didn't know until after they made love when Minerva seduced him and he was drunk that he had feelings for her and started dating after the match was over. He's always been confident with women."
Jurgen Becker: "Really interesting to know love happens like that. I'm glad you met her."
Markus Raab: "Yeah, and I always be there for them. However, I can't stop, but think about this match I have next week against Casanova English for the Chaos title."
Although his friends would usually shake their head at Markus's consistent thoughts about wrestling, trying to distract him, when Markus brought up the word title, it been on Markus's mind all-day, and they had to accept it.
Tobias Schmitz: "I'd smack you around your head if it were a regular match, but damn, you got a title match? Sweet, it shows you opening up is also paying off. You're getting better and better in that ring."
Jurgen Becker: "I can understand you thinking about the title match. Why wouldn't you? You always dreamed of being a solo's champion in Carnage Wrestling, right?"
Markus Raab: "Of course. I have earned the title match this time. I bust my ass to defeat every wrestler around me. I have been winning my last three matches in a row. You guys should come along, I think I will need that extra support, but I'm a brutal wrestler in the ring, beating the shit out of everyone around me. That won't change."
Tobias Schmitz: "I fully understand what you mean. Yeah, you're too vicious for me to face against in the ring. I'd get destroyed in a matter of minutes. Well, all I can say is good luck to you against this English dude. I know you'll do well and win the title."
Markus Raab: "Breaking that curse is something I need to do in Carnage. I want to be solo's champion so severely that I crave holding one of their belts in my hands, especially anything with violence in the belt. It's all I want to do is beat the shit out of English and win that belt."
His friends agreed, patting his shoulder, smiling with Markus as they enjoyed the last few twenty minutes of Vegas Golden Knights playing on the ice, scoring two more goals before the game ended. They stood up and went to get some merch of getting Vegas Golden Knight jerseys, including for Markus, with his favourite player on the back.
Markus Raab: "How do I get a fan club pass like you both have to come to these games, for now?"
Jurgen picked up a form for Markus and gave it to him.
Jurgen Becker: "There's your answer, go home, fill it out, and we get this sent in the next game we go to, getting you signed up to watch Ice Hockey with us. It will be so cool. I also like to meet Konrad one day."
Tobias Schmitz: "I just thought that myself. Always so down to earth and so well mannered guy from seeing him on TV."
Markus Raab: "I think I can arrange that. He knows about you both as you do with him. He means the world to me. Come to EHWF PPV, and you get to meet him there. I see you guys soon."
Markus fist-bumped his friends before he left them to head back to his headquarters. As Markus got to the headquarters, rushing upstairs to Henry's office. When Markus gets there, he knocks on the door. Henry pressed the button for Markus to enter, and he places the fan club pass on the table.
Markus Raab: "Fill this out for me, please. I want to go again."
Henry Losak: "No problem at all. I'm so glad you discovered your other passion for the sport. Now, we got some heavy training for you the next few days in the headquarters for that Chaos title match."
Markus Raab: "Thank you, I had a blast at Vegas Golden Knights game. It made me remember the past well. I want to be loyal to a sport I can go to regularly.
Markus remembers the other thing Henry said, and he shook his head, slapping him across his head slightly.
Markus Raab: "Oh, Henry, you know by now, I want to break Cassinova's fucking body in the ring and to be the champion. I want to break that bloody curse that's been haunting me for years now. I want that fucking title in my hands. I do any training to be ready; you know that."
Henry Losak: "I fully accept you joining this fan club pass. I will fill it out immediately and give you money by hand to pay for it. I wanted to remind you, that's all. Now, go and spend time with Samuel. Nice jersey, you got there."
Markus Raab: "Thank you. I leave you to it and get on with your work."
Markus leaves Henry's office, looking through the glass and getting excited when Markus saw Henry filling out the form to be a fan club of the Vegas Golden Knights fan club. He leaves the base and heads back to his apartment, hugging Samuel, showing him his jersey and goes up to the bedroom to get some well-deserved sleep.

Markus's discovery of Konrad's past unveiled. Las Vegas, Nevada. Tuesday, 23rd March. (Off-Camera)
It was ten in the morning, and Markus had trained for the upcoming match with English since seven in the morning as he's busting his butt, blasting every opponent in his way. Markus was unleashing the kind of violence he's been missing for a while, but he needed to be violent on doing everything it takes to win the Chaos title.
It had been a burden for him for years, and he wanted to do everything to break it. Suddenly, as Markus was bashing and beating the hell out of every single trainer up, Henry has a phone in hand, shouting stop at the trainers for them to take a break.
Markus Raab: "You said yourself I needed to train my ass off, and now you're stopping training; what's the fucking deal?"
Henry Losak: "It's Konrad; he wants to talk to you about something."
Markus Raab: "Oh, let me guess, Minerva women troubles or something to do with her at least?"
Henry Losak: "He said nothing to do with her. He won't tell me exactly, but he wants to talk to you. I think it's serious as Konrad sounds upset and worried about the discussion."
Markus nodded and told the trainers to rest due to an important matter. Markus took the phone up to the meeting room and closed the door, leaving Henry to get back to business as Markus says this.
Markus Raab: "Hey, how's it going?"
Konrad Raab: "After what I've been told on Saturday, I've not been dealing with this shocking news well."
Markus Raab: "OK, so if it's not about Minerva, what's the issue?"
Konrad Raab: "It's my past Markus. I don't know how to tell you, but I need to talk to you before mentioning this to anyone else. Are you somewhere away from Samuel and Henry?"
Markus Raab: "Yeah, I'm in a meeting room."
Markus was now very concerned about what Konrad had to say, especially when Markus had been absent from Konrad's life for a while due to the wrestling training he was getting at the time. Konrad sighs, not wanting at all to tell Markus the story. He had to and gets down to it.
Konrad Raab: "I was told a few weeks ago, the extent of my fears of anger. When I was twenty-four years old, I was roaming around Cologne streets when this guy bothered me. When I walked away, he grabbed hold of my arm, and I started unleashing punches after punches to a man's face."
Markus Raab: "No way would that be something you did."
Konrad Raab: "But something else happened that day, I wore this spike chain bracelet, and then I placed it around my wrist, and I stabbed him multiple times in his chest, his heart and his head. He almost died but luckily survived as I dropped the weapon and ran away. Markus, I'm a god damn criminal. I still can't comprehend the damage I did. I nearly joined a god damn gang with the attacks I have done, but what I did to attempt murder was the worst I've ever done."
Markus was shaking on Konrad's cry, gasps before placing his hand across his mouth, knowing Konrad was exactly like Markus, but he buried it deep inside of him.
Markus Raab: "I can't believe it. I understand you can barely speak to me. I'm glad I'm the first person you told."
Konrad Raab: "I had to. I got a DVD to send you, showing evidence of what I did. It's why you didn't see me because I ran to Norway with my auntie for a while, getting away from the crime I did. I tore up about it. It's why I hate myself and hate being angry. I can't believe it. I cried so hard that I wanted to kill myself multiple times because of what I did."
Markus Raab: "I didn't know anything about this. Now that explains so much why you ran from your anger for so long. I still love you as a brother. That's all in the past, and don't worry; I won't tell anyone what you told me, not even Henry or Samuel."
Konrad Raab: "Thank you, the worst thing is I need to tell Minerva. That's why you had to be the first to know and had to tell you now. I'll see you next week; got kids coming over this afternoon and spend a whole week with them."
Markus Raab: "I see you soon, bro. Please talk to me if you ever feel you're in that suicidal situation and want to talk more about this. I'll always be there."
At the same time, Markus and Konrad cut each other off and gasps on the discovery of his brother being one dangerous, violent man if his anger goes out of control. Markus passes the phone back to Henry, although Markus looked shook up.
Henry Losak: "Why you scared?"
Markus Raab: "I made a promise to Konrad I wouldn't tell anyone so I won't. I get back to training, but it was an emergency; thank you for the heads up."
Henry nods his head before Markus heads downstairs, knowing that Konrad had a high anger rate than Markus himself did. It's something Markus had to shake it off before he gets back to training to his potential, making himself angrier than he has for the last few weeks, preparing for the match he wants to break the curse for years.

Alleyway once again for the title. Baltimore, Maryland. Sunday 28th March (On-Camera)
Now Lord Raab had to take things a lot more seriously when it comes to his opponent, especially carrying around the Chaos title. Raab's proud he had an opportunity to break a curse that's been on his mind for years he couldn't achieve. He has flames going off in the barrel, having people asleep in the alleyway. Seething with anger as he walks around the alleyway like a crazed dog as Henry holds the camera.
Lord Raab: "Finally, the time has come to face against a champion in this place properly after the undefeated streak I've been on for a few weeks now, and I love every fucking second of it. No, I will not show or tell about myself this week because there's no room for that, especially I get the opportunity of a lifetime against a silly bitch named Casanova English."
Raab spat on the floor, on the country name, as it made him sick each time he heard it, especially when it came to Konrad's ex-wife destroying his life. Raab stands closer to the fire, having a sick smirk on his face.
Lord Raab: "Oh, I know you've been on an undefeated run for the last few weeks ago, with defending your title every single week Casanova, a stupid name, by the way. Showing how dominant you can be against Sebastian Hawke and Zack Von Owen, well, vegetatively speaking anyway."
Raab shows a sick smirk again, but this time, he puts a stone in the barrel and just the loud clung noise, raising the fire's temperatures which got more extensive.
Lord Raab: "But the problem with your title defences is it's been the same two opponents every single time since you competed in the ring. That's fucking pathetic. Unlike you, I've been facing different wrestlers every week and defeating them single-handedly. So it must be throwing you off the table, knowing how destructive I will be when I beat the living shit out of you and facing someone new for once in your entire life. You have no nerve to say you want to face different opponents every week, happy to win against the same people, showing what a selfish bastard you are."
All Raab could do was nod, smirking as he gets started with being angry once again, shaking his fist on the camera, even punching it, not directly at the camera, though, close to it.
Lord Raab: "Is what your champion run has come to, not wanting to push the boundaries of hell you're going to step in? Just as I expected to stay in your comfort zone. But I'm not Zack; I'm not Sebastian. I'm a much bigger bastard. I will not sleep on this match, no fucking chance as I've been busting my ass the last two weeks, to break a damn curse that's been hindering me since the day I got here."
Raab has a piece of paper in his head, having a set of goals to achieve in wrestling, but nobody will know now he dumps it in the fire.
Lord Raab: "I will come in as a monster because there's nothing more I want to do than to tear your fucking head off. I want to make you bleed, I want to break the damn rules, and I certainly will be angry because, unlike you, who won't do either of those things to retain the Chaos title, I will. I will make the title much better than you've been treating the belt, despite how much of a joke everyone else has treated it in your words, but you've treated it as an even bigger joke with your mindset as of late by facing the same people over and over again, making you stale as fuck."
It was so much passion come out that there are flames in Raab's eyes, boiling with anger, even shouting directly at the camera.
Lord Raab: "What I threw in the fire is my goal I've yet to achieve, and it will damn fucking happen tomorrow night that's been hanging on my fucking head. It's been hanging over my fucking head for years, winning a Carnage solo's title. Each time I think about titles in this company, I want to unleash the monster inside of me, tearing you piece by piece until there's nothing left of you to punish."
Raab shows his teeth, picking up a reasonably sharp knife and slices a bit of his arm, causing it to bleed as he laughs like a mad man.
Lord Raab: "All this blood I'm pouring from my damn skin is how much it's been killing me to have this fucking curse that everyone can break, but I can't. I want the curse gone forever by beating the living shit out of you, doing everything it takes to walk away from the match, regardless of this cut on my hand to win. I would fucking trade my family to win this fucking title because I will break you."
Henry had to stand farther back from Raab, seeing the desperation in his eyes, like he wanted to murder Casanova to be in the Carnage solo's champion books.
Lord Raab: "I will throw you around like a ragdoll, making you my bitch to a point you will never get this title as long as you are champion, knowing you only fought two opponents in your damn Chaos reign and that will be gone when I either pin or make you tap out, hearing you scream like a bitch when I'll rip away the Chaos title you put in the bad light to a monster who will be defending it against different opponents every week, and you wonder where the fuck you'll go next. Prepare to be Raabinated by the new Chaos champion, having no more plague hanging over me when I walk away from Chaos as the new champion."
Lord Raab saw fire grew so high that Henry got a fire extinguisher and put the fire out as Raab laughs as an absolute monster would. Henry cuts the camera, with Raab, smelling of fire, how he wanted things to be before heading back to his headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.
