After dropping Matt Knox off to see Belle, Mia stumbles her way back outside into the cool evening. Dusk was falling over the land. Mac Bane and Amber Ryan had seen the missteps of Mia as they approached the hospital. Mac lit a cigarette and waited for Mia to approach. Amber who was trying to quit smoking changed sides so that she would be upwind of the cigarette. He looked over at her, “Sorry love.”, and quickly crushed the cigarette under the heel of his boot. “If you want, go check on Belle. I’d like to have a word with Mia before I go up.”
Mia squints into the evening, body tense and ready to fight but relaxing slightly when she sees who the voices belong to. She nods politely to Amber as she passes and squints at Mac, almost nervously, “So uhm, what can I do for you Mac? If you don’t mind…” She leans up against a nearby wall, wincing slightly as she takes a puff of her e-cig. “Need a quick break from the atmosphere up there anyways.” He smiles watching Amber walk away. "I know it's your sister, but can you give Belle a little space? She's not dealing with any of this well at all."
Mia eyes Mac, her gaze narrowing as she lets the puff of smoke plume around her before laughing. The sound is shrill, hysterical, but deadly and soft. “She isn’t dealing with this? Mac, I know that you think Zephyr is your family and what not, but at the beginning of the year, I didn’t even KNOW I had blood relatives. Mother? Dead. Father? Presumed dead only to find out he’s a high ranking scientist in a cult that I’ve warred against in the past. I later find out that I not only have a sister, but I have TWIN younger sisters that I used to be close to. I am doing my BEST to hold everything that I can together, but what fucking right do you have to say anything? I’ve given her her space, notice how she’s waiting for an update from the doctor in the waiting room and I’m here?”
Mia’s stone cold glare breaks and her eyes well up in tears. Without waiting for an answer, she plows on. “I get that everyone has been through a lot Mac, I really and truly do. I wanted to try and make things better, I get I’ve screwed up and I understand I have a lot on my plate to atone for. I. GET. THAT. I am doing the best to make sure I have a place to hang my hat and get a chance to do so. I am doing my best to ensure that I have a chance to have a relationship with a sister that six months ago? I didn’t truly realize how much I yearned for. Now then, do yo…” She sighs, the overwhelming emotions finally getting the better of her. Putting her head down, she takes another hit from her THC pen before saying softly, “I’m sorry. People expect me to just… Have the answers. To instantly know how to undo the things I thought at the time were right. I’m trying the best I can…” She gestures uselessly around her and leans her head back, enjoying the cool night breeze as best she can. “I just want the chance to be the sister I never got the chance to be.”
Mac smiles sympathetically at her, “I get it, it’s ground that you’ve not had to navigate before. It’s all very strange and alien. Everything hurts and nothing feels….'good.' At least not right now.” He pauses, but like Mia, he forges ahead. “I know, well no...I don’t know. I do feel like you’re doing the best that you can. I’m not in your shoes, so I don’t know what you know. I can tell you what I do know, ever since Zeph was deposited on my doorstep, I’ve done everything I could think of to make sure that she felt like she belonged. I also know that my son, Jimmy, absolutely adores you. He loves you like a sister. He’s treated Zeph in the same way he would treat my daughter Jules. I think you have more family than you realize, might not be by blood but by actions. So, never assume that you’re in this fight alone Mia, me and mine will have your back.”
Mia nods. She sniffs, and attempts to look at Mac in the eyes before she gazes up at the sky instead, “I’ve tried you know. With Belle. I’m genuinely happy they found each other, truly. They seem good for each other. Belle, hasn’t forgiven me though. I reached out and apologized as Zeph was getting out of the hospital the first time, after, well, you know. They both accepted, but I don’t know if she was really ready, decided that space was going to be what they needed. Then all of this happened and I swear that I didn’t mean to get carted out of there. If I hadn’t been on the way here in an ambulance already, I would have been there to make sure that didn’t happen.” She shrugs, “It all did though and I get the very strong feeling that Belle places the blame solely on my shoulders. I get it and truth be told, that’s what I’d do too. Since she got here with Zeph, I’ve tried to stay out of her way. If I stay away for too long, she gets upset, but if I’m around to wait with her? She gets upset at my presence. Swear I’m trying to make good, but Amelia was the one that put Zephyr here in the first place and I’ve convinced myself it was to protect her from The Institute, she’s not ready to go at them alone, believe me.” Turning her face, Mac can see the ugly injury from the kick that knocked Mia out. “I don’t know what happened in the years since I’ve seen them last, but whatever DID happen, it’s a lot different than it was before. We can’t let them get to Zephyr until she’s back up on her feet.” She shakes her head and takes a puff, closing her eyes and swaying slightly on the wall.
“Have you heard from the rest? I know Jimmy was supposed to have been here already.” Mac digs out a cigarette and lights it with his Zippo lighter. “It will be tough to keep a guard posted in her room until she’s able to be brought out of this coma. We’ll do whatever it takes to help you protect her.”. The rumble of a motor can be heard in the distance, the deep resonating tone of a big block V-8 motor. “Unless my ears are deceiving me that’s likely him.”
Mia nods wearily, “Yeah, Dorian, Chloe, and Zach are all nearby and can be here as soon as they’re needed. They wanted to find themselves a place to stay until a more permanent solution comes up.” Mac digs into his front pocket and takes out a leather pouch. From within that leather pouch he produces a key, “You already should have my home address from Jimmy. You are all welcome to stay at my house.”. He offers up the house key to Mia. “Please, take this and use it. It’s a four bedroom house.”
Mia takes the key and pockets it, nodding her thanks as she takes another puff, closing her eyes briefly before going to get phone and sending a few text messages to let the appropriate people know. She closes her eyes again and sags to the ground, "Thanks, all things considered I'd say I'm in your debt now."
Mac smiles at Mia, “No dear girl, you’re family now.” Mac shoots her a wink as he makes his way to the hospital entrance.
