So a date? She missed a date on account of my ticker. Well that seems unfair. Mameha stared at a large calendar that showed the month of October there. Scribbled on the day she had her heart attack was the words, DATE NIGHT- Matt. Small hearts had been drawn around the words. And the letters have an x through them. The x mark's looked to be drawn deep over the words tthere. As if made only out of frustration.
Another day is circled. The day is today. The day she got to come home to Pearl. Instead of hearts there, small happy faces are scribbled there and Mameha's name is written there along with the words, home.
Pearl had just left to the store to pick up some medication and other necessities, I look at a clock hanging on a living room wall. I bet I can beat her. I have to beat her. I walked slowly and calmly to sit outside and I called for a cab. When one finally arrived I climbed into the back seat. I am not about to let any heart attack or sickness stop me from doing what must be done. I know my Pearl.
Not after long, I am at the CW Pavilion Where I find a comfy bench to relax on. The cab driver has been paid to sit and wait for her. I wait patiently, knowing usually when I showed up to a place with a mission everything fell into place. He would come by. Well he had to.
Matthew Knox himself would indeed eventually walk by, slinging his gym bag over his shoulder. He would see the older woman, look past her, then snap back to her, raising a finger “You’re...with Pearl, right?” he asked.
Mameha nodded her head. "Yes. I am. I actually came to speak to you," Mameha said staring at him. Matthew looks around, then nods, smiling. He strides over and sits next to the lady.
“I must be the luckiest guy in the world. Two beautiful women seeking me out like this.” He remarks, putting on his best charming smile as he settles in next to her.
"I think I should get straight to what I came here for as I am tired. First off, Pearl doesn't talk to me about her love life that often. I know a bit here and there. She is private. Even with me at times. And I know she respects me enough to give me the same courtesy and respects my own privacy."
She takes a deep breath before continuing, "I can tell she likes you. And I need you to know. Pearl did not just miss your date for a selfish reason. Or because she doesn't like you. It was my fault," she chuckled then as she stared at him. "Or rather, my tickers fault," she pointed at her heart.
"She stayed with me that night to take care of me. To save me again. She is a good person. And I thought it only fair to tell you on her behalf, she was taking care of me in the hospital when she should have been with you."
Matthew listened quietly, nodding. He responds “No..she was right where she needed to be, then.” He eyes the older woman, furrowing his brow, “You know..you didn’t have to come tell me this. A phone call woulda sufficed. Do you need a lift home?”
Mameha chuckled at him. "Well, it's not like I have your number. I bet Pearl doesn't even have your number yet," she chuckled again because she knows how Pearl is. The only way she had Knox's number is if he messaged her on that ridiculous twitter. And no way would Pearl ask for it herself.
"Pearl is used to fighting her own battles. Do you think she asked me to come down here today? Because if you do, well, I would tell you, you had better enjoy that date when it comes, and learn what you can about her."
She got to her feet slowly, once to her feet she gave him a wide smile, "I am not that old little raven. I have a cab outside. Don't worry about me. The only thing in my lifetime that could make me any happier, is knowing I helped Pearl find her own happiness. You have a good day now. And remember, it's the little things we all do that make a difference."
With that she left Matt Knox sitting in the hallway by himself. His gym bag at his feet.
Pearl walked next to Matt, her heart fluttered a bit faster anytime her arm or hand grazed his side. The sky is filled with stars. They have just finished ice cream cones. The flair for something extravagant and extraordinary, is definitely the complete opposite Pearl has decided to steer their date. She is a simple and humble person when it comes to romantic encounters.
As Pearl led them towards a place… she said, "So explain yourself… I don't mean to force you into a situation you do not want to be… but you know, I have heard a lot, and I mean a lot about you since I got here to Baltimore. Some in promos… some maybe perhaps I have been told personally. Don't mean to put you on the spot. But you deserve a chance to explain yourself."
After she spoke the setting changed. They no longer had the city to brighten their path, they had lights from a city park to brighten their way. Rolling hills and small wooded areas can be seen around them as Pearl kept looking over at him for an explanation.
“What, you mean like Winter saying I'm a wife beater? The shit about me being an addict? Bad dad accusations?” he chuckled, shaking his head “Not a good sign that I need you to be specific, is it darling?” he sighed, reaching out and grabbing her wrist to halt her as he himself stopped walking.
“No, I never abused Astryd physically. Emotionally? I guess you could hang that at my door, considering that I left her the way I did all those years ago. I never did anything to hurt my children, and while I was absent and generally shitty I kept contact with them the best I could. Texts, mostly toward the end of my isolation. Always sent gifts on birthdays, valentines day, christmas…” his gaze went off to somewhere far away, and long dead now..
“But no. I’m not an abusive prick, and I've been cleaner than I ever have been with the other stuff. Haven’t touched heroin going on eight months now. Same with coke. I still smoke weed, and I drink. And maybe, sometimes, I pop an extra vicodin when I'm hurting because the warm and fuzzy feeling beats the shit out of all the old aches.”
He turns his gaze, bashful and a bit nervous now, back down to her “That cover it?”
Pearl listens to his words. She did not expect him to reveal so much. She almost feels a bit guilty, as he has told her some things that feel like secrets. Her eyes stayed on his hand gripping her wrist. After a moment, they would both be in silence as Pearl processed everything he had said.
"I- I- I appreciate your honesty. More than you know." Adrienne's words came to mind as Pearl's eyes went to Matt's face. He has a self destruct button. Is that what he was doing now? She takes a deep breath wondering if she too, was also self destructing. The kind of man he described is a man she should want to be far away from.
A small smile made its way to her lips. She used her other hand to set on one side of his face, "The things you have said. That isn't you anymore, right?"
Pearl kept eye contact with him trying to make herself see the man he has been to her. And she saw him. That man who has been nothing, but nice since she met him. Even when she had made it very hard for him to do so. The man he spoke of was not in his eyes right now. He is a kind man. Perhaps just misunderstood.
“I’m still me. I don’t shoot shit in my veins anymore, though. I’m still...mouthy. But, no. No I'm… different, I guess? Feel like an alien in this world, after being gone so long.” he sighed, leaning into her touch, “I’m not sure of much, not anymore. I am sure that you make me feel better. And your hand feels like velvet on fire against my skin.”
She smiled slightly listening to his words. She put her other hand on the other side of his face and began tracing circles with her thumb there. Pearl began pulling his face down towards her acting like she might give him a kiss on his lips. But when his lips got close to hers she turned her head around his face so she could place her lips by one of his ears.
Pearl said then, "Catch me. Catch me if you can."
In one quick movement she turned around. She took off in a sprint across the rolling green grass. Her giggling filling the night air around them as she began to play a game with Matt. Matt stood stunned for a moment, before allowing himself a smile. He took after her, following the giggling. Deceptively fast for his size, but not near as fast as her. After a moment, he stops running, having lost her in the trees.
“Pearl?” he inquired softly, maybe he’d lost her, ran off in a whole other direction?
"Boo," she said coming up behind him. She let her arms wrap around his waist. And she turned her head to the side and rested it there on his back. "Just want you to know. I am going to let you get close to me. The things in your past are gone. Wiped away. At least with me. You get to start off fresh."
She squeezed him tight, hoping she wasn't making a mistake. Having someone this close. It felt good. It felt warm. Well if this is a mistake, she can enjoy this while it lasts. And everybody deserves a chance right? A chance to prove everyone wrong. Matthew raises his hands to grasp hers as he finds himself swaying slowly in her grasp. His reply came soft, almost a whisper.
“I won’t let you down.”
