We open to a simple set, the Carnage logo projected onto a white screen behind three stools. In the middle sits Belle Silva, with two other chairs to either side. It’s a chilly November day in Baltimore in front of the Carnage Arena, and Belle has dressed for the weather, a steaming cup of hot cocoa beside her and a thermos aside from that. She smiles brightly at the camera and the onlookers that have gathered.
Belle Silva: Dearest Legion! I come to you a few short days away from Ultimate Carnage 6, our BIGGEST show of the year, and the one that is for sure to end 2020 with a bang! The card is stacked with some of the biggest matches that we as an audience have wanted to see, with all but one of our prestigious titles on the line!
Belle waits for the gathering crowd to get settled before continuing.
Belle Silva: Arguably one of the biggest matches, if not THE biggest match on the card, the World Heavyweight Championship will be decided when ‘Godly’ Ken Davison defends against “The Oracle” Silvio Leon!
The crowd reacts appropriately as Belle encourages them.
Belle Silva: Legion, today is your lucky day because I am not just here to talk the talk. Oh no. I am here to present to you an unscripted and live interview with both of the competitors in the World Championship match! Now first, let’s bring out our champion extraordinaire. Love him or hate him, Ken Davison has been on a path to greatness and he has shown he would not be denied. He went through
Paragon, he went through Amber Ryan, and he went through Jack Michaels, three feats when by themselves sound daunting, but to achieve all three? There’s something special there folks! He tells us all what he’s setting out to do and he accomplishes those feats regardless of the obstacles in his path; Legion, I give to you our World Heavyweight Champion, ‘Godly’ Ken Davison!
On cue, 'Godly' Ken Davison walks out wearing a black suit with a neatly pressed orange shirt and a matching pair of tinted sunglasses. Of course, he has the Carnage Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship over his shoulder. He walks over to Belle and shakes her hand before taking the stool to her right. Belle claps along with the decent crowd that have made camp in front of the makeshift set and as they begin to settle and Belle picks up her mic once again.
Belle Silva: Ken, thank you for joining us on such short notice! Now, before I bring out your number one contender, I was just wondering if you’d like to say anything first?
Ken Davison: Thank you for the introduction, Belle. It's a pleasure to be here and even more if a pleasure to see this kind of professionalism. We need more Belle Silvas in this world of Johnny Vegases.
Belle blushes as she accepts the compliment.
Belle Silva: Well, thank you, but that’s enough about me. After all, this isn’t just about me, and while you’re important Ken, what would you be without a worthy contender? Ladies and gentlemen, our next guest that has accepted this last minute invite has been on a hot streak since inking a deal with Carnage. With a combination of natural charisma, an unworldly ability, and the fire to back it all up, Silvio Leon has been a force of nature. Undefeated in singles competition, Silvio has become something of a leader in the locker room, pushing hard for an equal playing field for any and all comers on the Carnage roster. My dearest Legion, I give to you, “The Oracle” Silvio Leon!
Silvio strides to Belle’s side dressed in black slacks and matching waistcoat, dark red leather monk-strap shoes, an open red peacoat and white button down. Beaming, he takes Belle’s hand and kisses the back of it.
Silvio Leon: A pleasure as always! Hey, thanks again for helping out with my last promo. If you ever wanna guest judge again, we’ve always got a spot for you on the Carnivorous panel.
Giving her a wink, he slides into his seat. Belle laughs lightly as she speaks.
Belle Silva: I’ll have to take you up on that, it was too much fun! Thank you so much for letting me be a part of it!
Belle stops gushing for a moment so she can compose herself.
Belle Silva: Later, later… Right now though…
She beams at the people and camera in front of her.
Belle Silva: It’s time to get down to this. Gentlemen, the rules here are simple, verbal sparring only, no physical contact for the sake of everyone present, not that we’d have any issues with that from my present company. The unfun stuff out of the way though, this is the first time that the Carnage Legion will see you two go head to head and clash over Carnage’s top prize. With everything else going on, this is one of THE must see matches of the evening. Ken, forging his path through the old school of Carnage, ready for the next challenge. Silvio, a man who came in quiet as a lamb and is taking the field by storm. Let’s start things off easy shall we? Same question to both of you, where is your mind at going into this match? Last event of the year, a chance to leave a lasting impression and an eagerness to see you come back in 2021, it’s all a lot to take in. Silvio, let’s start with you?
Silvio Leon: Thanks, Belle. I’m grateful for every opportunity I’ve had since coming to Carnage. Being here has allowed me to achieve things I never in my wildest dreams saw myself doing; it’s introduced me to a new part of myself. I think what’s the most surprising is how much people believe in it; believe in me and what I want for everyone here. The fact I’m in this match tells me the Legion is as ravenous for something new as I am for the title. As long as I’m breathing in that ring, I’m determined not to let anyone down.
Ken Davison: The reason you are here is because Adrienne Levi gifted you this opportunity. You were given this. You're really going to sit here and talk about how the Legion wants something new like they weren't calling for my head the second I won this title? Even when I was "something new" they wanted something else. Inside of those ropes, you're a fearsome competitor. But, outside of the ring you're not special. You're just "anyone but 'Godly' Ken Davison."
Smiling, Silvio shrugs, raising a brow.
Silvio Leon: Ken, my shot for this was chambered and ready even before Adrienne’s victory. She didn’t give me anything; she denied you something. You were looking to salve your wounded pride and, hey - I get that. You didn’t take Ade seriously, hadn’t been paying attention to the progress she’d made and assumed she was the same person going into that match as she was coming into Carnage. You paid for that, and wanted a little change back. But Adrienne opted out of letting you dictate the schedule and the rules of the game. Not that you would know about that. Even now, you’re trying to erase Paragon by out-Jack Michaelsing Jack Michaels; trying to beat his record. You’ve been measuring your success by the rules someone else set instead of making your own. You are not, ‘something new.’ And if you really believe the Legion would be fine with any ol’ fighter holding that belt instead of you, you aren’t giving them enough credit.
The camera focuses in on Davison who is digesting Silvio's words. Belle coughs politely as she breaks the silence.
Belle Silva: First question in and it’s already getting spicy! A war of words like no other and now let’s move on. Ken, you’ve had several accomplishments thus far in your career and while some could arguably say that they were in poor taste, they are accomplishments nonetheless. What was the one thing that you did in 2020 that was just… The icing on the cake?
Ken Davison: I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, Belle. I mean you could stand here and point to any of my recent accomplishments and call them "icing on the cake." I could point out that each and every member of Carnage Wrestling that made it into the eFed broadcast Top 100 has lost against me and call that the "icing on the cake." You can look at the fact that Adrienne Levi realized that her victory over me was a fluke, look at the fact that she was afraid to face me again, as "icing on the cake. " But the fact of the matter is I have come out and done exactly what I have said I was going to do because I have the best support system I can ask for. That is the icing on the cake.
Belle nods in understanding.
Belle Silva: Fair enough but while you and your supporters call Levi’s win a “fluke” there are several more people out there, I’m sure Silvio included, that would say quite the opposite. Silvio, would you care to respond?
Silvio Leon: I think attributing someone’s win to a lapse of skill on your part is a lot easier on the ego than admitting a superiority in theirs. It’s also a lot easier to say that someone’s afraid instead of admitting that they just have priorities that don’t include you. Adrienne doesn’t see the Baltimore City Championship as a placeholder for something else. She is taking her role as the champion of the city seriously. And, once again, you’re measuring success by someone else’s standards. I wouldn’t deny or diminish your victories, Ken, but here’s the thing. Obviously the people who ranked these wrestlers you’ve defeated believe they’re skilled; important. But do you? And if you don’t, how do you value those wins over them?
Ken Davison: To assume that I am diminishing Ms. Levi's skill by calling her victory what it is, a fluke, is your mistake, not mine. I have made a career out of proving that when I am at my best, I am THE best. The higher the caliber of my opponent only serves to pad my resume. That doesn't make them any less important or less skilled. That just shows my worth.
Silvio holds up a finger signalling Ken and Belle to wait a moment before he takes his phone out and taps its screen a few times. He clears his throat before he speaks.
Silvio Leon: ‘Fluke - noun. Something good that has happened that is the result of chance instead of skill or planning. Synonyms: Accident, luck, arbitrary, ‘more by accident than design.’ Cambridge Dictionary.
He pockets his phone and gives Ken a smile, spreading his hands.
Silvio Leon: If you believe calling anyone’s win over you, a ‘fluke,’ doesn’t deny their skill, then all I have to say is, ‘You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.’
Belle looks nervously between the two men and then back at the camera, coughing slightly to get everyone’s attention.
Belle Silva: Moving on… Silvio, while Ken’s actions have spoken volumes, you have been the silent sentinel that carries a big stick. You’re undefeated in singles competition and have befriended probably the one superstar most are simply afraid of. What’s been some of your personal highlights?
Silvio Leon: One of them is definitely what you just mentioned, but I think that kinda speaks to the accomplishment I’m overall happiest with; the connections I’ve made here. I never would have met these people if I hadn’t come to Carnage. Now I can’t imagine what my life would be like right now without them in it. And, hey - I’m an openly queer person of color. Junot Diaz has this quote about how vampires don’t cast reflections. When he never saw himself in the media he consumed growing up, he wondered if he was the same; monstrous because he was denied, on the cultural level, a reflection of himself. I had a similar experience as a kid. I can’t say if I can claim this accomplishment, but if seeing me out there doing my thing helps someone feel a little more okay with themselves, then that’s just one more reason for me to put everything I’ve got into my matches.
'Godly' Ken Davison: Easy there, Fluttershy. The isn't 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.' I have no problem with who you are and how you choose to live your life, but if the barometer you use to measure your success is how many friends you have, I have a huge problem with that. There is one reason and one reason alone that you get into a competitive business like professional wrestling. The record books don't show: 'Godly' Ken Davison, had one friend. The record book shows 'Godly' Ken Davison: World Heavyweight Champion. What's the cliché? It's show business, not show friendship. Those friends you pride yourself on? I'm sure one of them, at least one of them, would stab you in the back to get a shot at this championship, should you find a way to best me. It's a tale as old as Julius Caesar and Brutus or Cain and Abel. Hell, in this business alone I've seen it happen more times than I can count. Remember this, Silvio, I might be the cold, bitter bastard everyone makes me out to be, but like a true friend, I'll stab you in the chest.
Silvio flutters his lashes at his opponent.
Silvio Leon: I’m so glad you’ll always be true, Ken. Does Kyra know that’s your philosophy?
Davison stands up, kicking the stool out from under him at the mention of Kyra's name. Still, he holds back allowing Silvio to finish.
Silvio Leon: Believe me - if any one of the people I’ve become close to wants a shot at me for this or any other title I may earn during my time here, I’m not going to hold it against them and they hardly need to come at me sideways. If I have a title, of course I’m going to have to face competitors. My friends are incredibly talented. Inevitably, I am going to have to face one of them. I’ve accepted that.
Davison stands there, speechless and seething. Belle smiles nervously as she waits, but realizes there’s no crew to help right the flipped over chair. She glances back at the camera before setting her note cards down and picking up the stool, setting it behind Ken before sitting down again. Ken continues to stare a hole through Silvio, maintaining the currently tenuous truce.
Belle Silva: Right. So with all of this, I think it’s time we all reset, take a deep breath…
She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before taking control again.
Belle Silva: That said, I think it’s time we take a question from The Legion. Not just ANY Legion member, but as I’m sure you both know, our fan base includes people of all ages and as such, this question is from Cassie, nine years old, from right here in Baltimore. She writes in and asks…
Belle looks at the question and then quickly at both competitors.
Belle Silva: She would like to know that if both of you were ANY Pokemon type, what type would you be? Silvio, let’s start with you.
Silvio looks thoughtful, drumming his fingers on his thigh for a moment before answering.
Silvio Leon: If we’re going single type? Ghost. Dual type? I wanna say Ghost-Fire.
Belle looks at Silvio, her gaze glazed over as if lost in thought before she brings herself back.
Belle Silva: I do enjoy Ghost and Fire types. Personally though I think I’d want to go with maybe a Fairy and Psychic dual type…
She smiles slyly as she looks over at Ken.
Belle Silva: Same question to you Ken, if you were a Pokemon type, we’ll go ahead and say you can be a dual type if you’d like, what would it be?
‘Godly’ Ken Davison: Dark and Poison…
Ken lets the words slide off his tongue like a hissing of a snake. Belle shivers in response before clearing her throat.
Belle Silva: Alright, moving back into more serious matters. The World Championship, Carnage’s most prestigious prize. What does it mean to you to have that championship title, Ken?
‘Godly’ Ken Davison: This championship is a symbol. This championship symbolizes that I am the epitome of what a wrestler in this company should want to be. But, perhaps more importantly, it is a reminder. It is a reminder of each and every person that said I couldn’t beat Amber Ryan. It is a reminder of each and every person that said I couldn’t hold onto the championship against JC. It is a reminder that I have to scratch and claw each and every match to prove I deserve to be a champion. It is my job, as champion, to be the face of this company. This championship belt reminds me that I must continue to tell other people the truth, no matter how difficult it is for them to hear. It reminds me that I must lead by example, which I have not always succeeded in doing. Being the World Heavyweight Champion means that I must overcome whatever adversity is placed in my way, because this title makes me a role model.
At the mention of Amber, Silvio’s hand goes unconsciously to the bracelet he’s wearing on the opposite wrist. Belle notices and smiles warmly at Silvio.
Belle Silva: And Silvio? What does being Carnage World Champion mean to you?
For a long moment, Silvio is quiet, lapsing into thought.
Silvio Leon: That I wasn’t lied to; that we weren’t lied to. At least not here at Carnage. Out in the rest of the world, you hear about how all you have to do is put in the hours and you’ll succeed; doesn’t matter where you’re from or who you are. But let’s be real - where you start is a pretty good indicator of where you’re going to end up. Fortune has two meanings and they aren’t mutually exclusive. Here, though? Like I said - I’m a queer person of color who grew up in poverty. But every few weeks I step into that ring and I learn again that the world promised in books, songs, and stories exists; you don’t have to abandon it. It is dangerous and wild as anything the Grimms ever uttered, but if you want to step into the woods, the path is there. It’s here. If someone like me can make it at Carnage - someone who comes from nothing - anyone can. Being champion means I get to show the world what kind of place Carnage is - one that keeps the promises the world made you when you were young. And I have no intention of forgetting where I came from or the people that helped me get here.
He looks into the camera, expression sober, eyes bright.
Silvio Leon: I said we deserve to hear new stories. If I become champion, I want my challengers to be the people who haven’t had a platform like this yet. I want new perspectives. I want the hungry ones.
He draws in a deep breath.
Silvio Leon: I could try to be another Jack Michaels and hold onto a title for as long as I can, but when I said, ‘...that’s still using the language of the past and I’m not interested in those stories anymore,’ I meant it. I will not hold any title I earn here at Carnage longer than three defenses at a time. If I manage three successful defenses, I will vacate the title. If whoever takes the title up after that wants me, they got me. They can put the title on the line or not - up to them. But for me, being champion means carrying on the tradition of Carnage and keeping my promises.
'Godly' Ken Davison: How sentimental.
Davison rolls his eyes as the the camera switches its focus to him.
'Godly' Ken Davison: I have a question for you, Silvio. How does the length of a championship reign make someone less hungry? How am I denying anyone a chance to tell their story by wanting to trek my own? From the second I won this championship, I have said that I would defend this championship against any and all comers. How do you think you received this opportunity? I feel that you look down on me for wanting to be the best to ever hold this belt. How are my goals any less noble than yours?
Silvio raises a brow, smiling.
Silvio Leon: I haven’t received anything - said so at the beginning. I’ve had this in my sights for a while now, and I meet my goals. I earned this. I saw what I wanted and I worked until I was close enough to reach out and take it. I don’t look down on you for wanting to tell your own story in your own way - but that’s the rub, isn’t it? You say you want to be the best to ever hold that belt. Okay. On whose standards are you basing that judgment? Yours or someone else’s?
He grins.
Silvio Leon: Come to think of it, I got a tale you might find interesting; what with you being a man of the cloth and all. An elder from the Puyallup tribe in Washington visited with my school when I was a kid and he told us about when missionaries first came to their people. They had the tribe’s leaders sit down with the missionaries and listened to what they had to say. When the missionaries were done, having told the story of their God, the elders nodded and said to them, ‘That is a good story. Now we will tell you our’s.’ The missionaries were furious. How, they thought, could anyone believe their story was as good as what they had brought? How dare anyone think they could be equal to their God? And the truth is, Ken, that story reminds me of you. The way you disparage your opponents, the way no one else is special, the way no one is, ‘worthy,’ unless they’ve beaten you. Hell, not even then, what with you claiming every time you lost it was a fluke. You say I’m looking down on you. I say I’m your equal. But shoot, Ken. When you got a literal god complex on your hands, I get how someone saying they’re your equal can sound a lot like disrespect.
The two stare daggers at each other as the camera zooms in on Belle caught in the middle. She looks between the two before smiling that charming smile of hers and continues.
Belle Silva: That’s a perfect segue into my next and final question. Gentlemen, it’s been an honor and thank you so much for joining me on such short notice! We’ve just talked a lot about disrespect and how everyone feels about the motives of the other, but I’d like us to all take a quick breather and we can end things on a positive note. Maybe even an amicable handshake? Who knows?
Belle laughs nervously.
Belle Silva: So, to end things, what is the one thing that you respect the most about your opponent at Ultimate Carnage 6? Silvio, let’s start with you.
Silvio steeples his fingers in thought for a moment before speaking.
Silvio Leon: Well, I can definitely appreciate that Ken’s a snappy dresser with a flare for the dramatic. He’s also got an impressive record; won’t ever deny that. But I think what I respect the most about him is a more recent development. He’s been strong enough to, from what I can tell, let himself be vulnerable around someone. That takes courage.
Belle nods satisfied with the answer.
Belle Silva: And Ken? What do you respect the most about Silvio?
'Godly' Ken Davison: Silvio is true to himself. That might sound like a cop out, but there isn't a greater thing you can be in this world. I respect that.
Belle nods as she stands up and Champion and Challenger do the same.
Belle Silva: Gentlemen, again I can’t thank you enough for being a part of this! Now, I think it’s only appropriate for the two of you to shake hands.
Uncertain at first, Silvio offers his hand to Ken, who begrudgingly accepts it. The champion pulls Silvio in close, tightening his grip. Unintimidated, Silvio pushes himself away from Ken, and increases pressure on his end, the lightning between the two almost visible to the naked eye. Belle smiles again and steps out from behind the two and steps in front.
Belle Silva: Well, the tensions here have flown off the charts and I am excited to see how all of this plays out at Ultimate Carnage 6! Who else is?
The Legion lucky enough to be in attendance within local city guidelines, all pop, but the two men behind Belle only increase the pressure on the other.
Belle Silva: If you’d like to see how all of this plays out, we will see you all LIVE on December 7th, from right here at the Carnage Arena. If you’re unable to join us? We’ll catch you on the PPV stations around the nation, and if you STILL don’t want to tune in, well… It’s your loss. I’ll see you all soon Legion!
Belle waves and winks at the camera before blowing a kiss, bringing the show to a close.
Belle Silva: Dearest Legion! I come to you a few short days away from Ultimate Carnage 6, our BIGGEST show of the year, and the one that is for sure to end 2020 with a bang!
